Tips to change Simple Term Search to Advanced Term Search
A search term can range in complexity from a single word, a specific phrase, or to a series of words connected by basic or proximity operators.
Basic Operators: OR AND NOT
Proximity Operators: ADJ# NEAR# ... where # indicates number of words
|
boat |
retrieves text in which the single word, boat, is present |
|
boat or fish |
retrieves text in which either term is present |
|
boat and fish |
retrieves text in which both terms are present |
|
boat not fish |
excludes text in which term is present |
|
boat adj5 fish
|
retrieves text in which terms are adjacent and are order dependent Example: boat, or landing nearshore fish |
|
boat near5 fish
|
retrieves text in which terms are near each other and is not order dependent Example: boat ramp and all harvested fish Example: Fish and Game Boat |
Wildcard characters can be placed in the beginning, middle, or end of a term. A question mark replaces a single character. A dollar sign or an asterisk operate in the same way and can be used to find singular or plural terms before or after the main term.
Wildcards: ? $ *
| boat? | retrieves only boats (not boat or boating or boater) |
| $boat$ or *boat* | retrieves any word containing boat (steamboat or boats or boating) |
| boat* | retrieves zero or multiple characters after boat (boat or boats or boating) |
Parentheses can be used as a search mechanism to group similar terms together or to clarify the search when several operators are used. The terms inside the parentheses will be searched first.
(boater or boating) near5 (fisherm?n or fishing)
