As legislation is considered by the legislature and advances through the legislative process, there are several documents and resources that State Net links to the bill record to assist with tracking, advocacy, and compliance.
- Sponsor Profiles: the legislator who introduces a bill for consideration. Co-Sponsors are representatives who add their names and a supporter of the sponsor’s bill. State Net maintains sponsors and co-sponsors for all legislation and links to 7,900+ legislator profiles are provided so users can access contact information staff and social media links
- Committee Profiles: after a bill is introduced it is often referred to a fiscal or policy committee of select legislatures for consideration. The committee makes an initial determination if the proposal should go forward in the legislature so government affairs professional need to lobby these members for the bills they oppose and support. State Net maintains 5,000+ committee profiles that includes the legislators that serve on each committee, contact information, and staff
- Hearings: Committee will hold hearing to gather information about bills that are being considered. State Net provides advance notice when bills are scheduled for a committee hearing or are added to a floor calendar so users can make plans to monitor the debate and discussion.
- Votes: each committee and chamber needs to vote on a bill to advance the proposal through the legislative process. State Net maintains votes for each legislator so user can evaluate if they align with their positions.
- Amendments: Any change considered for a proposed bill. Typically offered when the bill is debated in the committee or on the floor. Customers need to know when amendments are offered for issues they are searching for and bills they are tracking so they can react to proposals that impact topics and legislation they need to monitor. State Net provides proposed amendments (approximately 20,000 annually) in 28 states
- Versions of Text: If an amendment is adopted , the amendment is incorporated in full bill text. State Net provides all versions of bill text so user can access the most recent version being considered and analyze changes made to previous versions.
- Bill Resources: in addition to legislative text, committee analysis, fiscal notes, or governor messages may be drafted for a bill being considered. State Net provides links to all of these documents so users can understand the legislative proposal.
- Session Calendars: Legislation can only be considered while legislatures are in session so State Net maintains convening dates, adjournment dates, and session deadlines.
